The British Museum

Artist’s Statement

Toilet Paper ‘on loan’ from The British Museum, is a canvas for artefacts that may have themselves been ‘acquired’ by The British Museum. The artefacts are documented and presented to the court of public opinion regarding the ownership of history and culture.

Using a transfer process to apply the composition onto toilet paper, each artefact is rendered in blue, evoking the visual language of blueprints and reproductions. This underscores the catalog’s role as a collection of records. The field of text behind each image is drawn directly from the artefact’s collection database, condensing the official description of the artefact into archeological noise. The single sheet of toilet paper is mounted using magnets, mimicking museum conservation and exhibition practices, where delicate and valuable works are carefully preserved and presented.
